Retinal diseases
The purpose of the CHU Sainte-Justine Retina Clinic is to diagnose retina cases and treat either medically or by surgery. The retina is the neural tissue covering the concave interior of the eye that transmits the visual information to the brain via the optical nerve. There are many paediatric retinal diseases, but the most frequent are hereditary, such as retinitis pigmentosa or retina dystrophies, premature infant retinopathy, retinal detachment and secondary retinopathies due to sickle cell anemia.
Retinal pathology treatments vary according to the severity of the disease and can include laser treatments, complex internal surgeries (such as vitrectomy) or external surgeries (scleral plication).
